Paint and Play - Portland Mom and baby Portrait Session
There’s something truly magical about photographing the bond between a mother and her young child. This recent motherhood photography session in Portland, Oregon was filled with sunshine, wild giggles, tender snuggles, and the most joyful splash of creativity — literally! We began our time together exploring one of Portland’s beautiful public arboretums, surrounded by towering trees, lush summer greenery, and soft pockets of natural light perfect for portraits. Toddlers thrive when they’re free to explore, and this sweet little girl was no exception. She held her mom’s hand, wandered through the pathways, and pointed excitedly at flowers and leaves. These tender moments always make for my favorite images — the kind where you can feel the connection between mom and baby.
We paused in a few scenic spots to capture a mix of classic portraits and candid storytelling images. The arboretum offered everything I love as a Portland family photographer: shaded forest trails, open grassy areas, and ever-changing textures that highlight the beauty of Oregon’s natural landscapes.
After our walk we settled into a quiet patch of grass where Mom had brought along a small canvas and paint set. This simple idea added such a personal, creative touch to their session.
The two of them painted side by side—tiny brush strokes, splatters of color, and sweet little hands reaching across the canvas. Mom laughed as her daughter tried to paint both the paper and moms face! These moments captured the heart of what I love about lifestyle family photography: authentic interactions, memories in the making, and activities that reflect your family’s connection.
Motherhood sessions are some of the most meaningful work I create. They celebrate the quiet moments, the joyful chaos, and the everyday beauty of raising little humans. Whether we’re exploring an arboretum, painting in the grass, or simply cuddling on a blanket, I aim to preserve these fleeting years with images that feel natural, loving, and full of life.
If you’re dreaming of your own Portland family photography session, I’d love to help you create something just as meaningful and unique. From local parks and arboretums to cozy in-home sessions, we can craft an experience that feels true to your family.
